What is Wur Bradford?

What is Wur Bradford?

Wur Bradford is a grassroots arts project which is about exploring how we can make our city and our world better through imagination and collective action.  Run by artists Jean McEwan, Chemaine Cooke and  Uzma Kazi),  Wur work with people  to explore how creativity might be used to make positive change within ourselves as well as our communities.
Our activities are people-led and include workshops, events, campaigns and discussions. We have run regular weekly sessions in a stall in Kirkgate Market for 2 and a half years from 2015 – 2017,  and we also work in  public spaces and venues throughout the city. We regularly work in partnership with and for other organisations around Bradford and have done projects for Bradford Council, Impressions Gallery, South Square Gallery, The Brick Box, and University of Bradford.

We are currently working on a project in Oastler Market called WE ARE HERE, celebrating it’s unique history, communities and stories. We will be working with market traders, members of the public and BCB community radio to tell the stories of the Market and its people through guided walks, printed ‘zines and sound. The project will culminate in a free two day event ‘We Are Here Party in the Market’ in April, featuring a BCB radio broadcast, alongside poetry readings, live music, art exhibition and print goodies. There will also be an exhibition of the project at Kala Sangam arts centre from April to June. More information announced soon!

We are also currently doing a year long action research project, also in Bradford; ‘Power Up Creative Resistance’, exploring creative responses to recent social and political shifts, in collaboration with University of Bradford’s Peace Studies ‘Thinkspace’ groups, funded by Joseph Rowntree Foundation.

Wur Bradford is a project for people to get creative, share stories and ideas, and connect with others. To get an idea of the project, some of the people who have been involved with us, and some of the activities we have done, you can watch a short video about Wur Bradford, made in late 2015 here or watch the slideshow below of that show some of our activities over the last 2 years.. we have done everything from creative  workshops  to bannermaking to art parties to self publishing fairs to helping to organise actions and vigils.

We are always looking to connect with more people – so get in touch if you would like to work with us.

We are also running Power Up Creative Resistance, an action research project documenting and creating artistic responses, opening up space to dialogue, re-think, and find alternative ways to go about changing our changing world whatever this means to us, from our point of view. The project, supported by CommUNIty Thinkspace group at  University of Bradford  and Joseph Rowntree Foundation,  will be running throughout 2017. If you would like to get involved with Power Up, drop us an email at powerupcreativeresistance@gmail.com
